CHUC MUNG NAM MOI - Vietnamese New Year -
As the new year begins in Japan and busy daily life returns to normal, many Chinese-speaking countries, including Vietnam, begin celebrating the Lunar New Year.
CHUC MUNG NAM MOI is a celebratory phrase meaning "Happy New Year." New Year's Eve in Ho Chi Minh City is no exception, starting with fireworks and fireworks that are set off in various places, followed by a visit to a pagoda, getting bitten on the head by a dragon (there are various theories, but it seems to be a "kirin"), expressing gratitude to ancestors, and praying for a peaceful and happy new year, making it the most important event of the year.
In Japan, we eat osechi, but in Ho Chi Minh City (South In the Vietnamese New Year, there is a dish called "Banh tét" that is indispensable on the New Year's table. It is similar to "Chimaki" in Japan.
Vietnamese rice dumplings are made mainly from three ingredients: glutinous rice, mung beans, and pork, which are wrapped in banana leaves (in the south) and boiled for a long time to create a preserved food.
The ingredients and the way of making are very similar in both the north and the south, but the names and shapes of the rice dumplings are different. The square Banh Chung in the north represents "earth", while the cylindrical Banh Thet in the south represents "heaven".

Himi Yellowtail and New Year's Yellow Yuzu

The sight of a yellowtail covered in fine fat fills me with anticipation in midwinter. I can surely savor the sweetness stored in its cells during the cold. With this in mind, my heart leaps with excitement, and the melting taste in my mouth exceeds my expectations, melting my frozen body from the inside out.
This is usually the last time that Himi yellowtail is landed, so take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy the end of the season.
Yellow yuzu plays an active role as a supporting role that adds a seasonal touch and color to soups and stews. It can be obtained from the beginning of autumn, but the first yuzu are quite sour and bitter. However, once the new year comes around, it becomes mellow. When you make it into needle yuzu, the skin also becomes sweet, so you can enjoy it to the fullest.
Please enjoy it before handing over its role to Kinome.

Music Selector's Note
From this playlist
#2, “American Tunes / Allen Toussaint”
Allen Toussaint was a New Orleans-based pianist and producer. As the title suggests, this album features famous songs by some of America's most famous musicians, including Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, and Professor Longhair.
#4, “Gaucho/Steely Dan”
One of the members, Donald Fagen, was scheduled to perform in Japan last year, but he had to cancel due to sudden illness. It's a shame. I took their 1980 album "Gaucho" on my cassette Walkman when I went to the US for the first time.
#11, “The Platinum Collection / Sam & Dave”
Sam Muwah of the soul duo Sam & Dave, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, passed away on January 5th of this year. He was 89 years old.
I hope that the current American music scene, born from social diversity, and that America as a place where people can play and enjoy the music they love, will remain unchanged.
